A container size for every program
From 1 quart greenhouse liners to specimen #25 material, we grow a full range of container sizes so you can build the program that fits your growing and resale plans.
Planted on 2-year spacing, dug at true dormancy
Our trees are planted out on 2-year spacing, in contrast to most Oregon growers who plant out on 1-year spacing. This allows for denser root growth, more light to encourage branch and leaf development, faster trunk caliper growth, and symmetrical canopies.
When digging, we preserve as much of the root fibers as possible and move the trees into cold storage. Trees are individually graded and calipered, then bundled, and shipping begins early February.
Starch Test & Harvest
We starch test root samples in the fall and harvest only once trees reach true dormancy, for maximum growth in the spring. We dig when the ground is friable and not muddy, for maximum root fiber preservation.
Root Moisture & Storage
Trees are kept in cold storage with a guaranteed optimal environment for temperature and humidity. Roots are kept moist from harvest to grading, potting and shipping.
Bareroot Deciduous Grading Standards
All trees graded by caliper and ANSI height standards
Precise Grading
Each tree is individually calipered and graded by hand with a steel caliper gauge.
1-Year Trees
Grown with a 2-year root system.
2-Year Trees
Grown with a 3-year root system.
6'–8' Branched
Either a one-year or a two-year tree, but always with a minimum caliper of 7/8".

Grown the way your program needs it
From field-grown grow bags to root-pruned conifer liners, every line is produced to give you faster establishment, less loss, and a quicker time-to-market.
Grow Bags
1-year and 2-year deciduous trees field grown in soil-filled grow bags — the optimum solution to increase yield from the less-aggressive, slower-growing and coarser-rooted varieties.
- Maximum root retention — soil stays intact around fibrous roots, reducing mortality
- Excellent root system — fine roots break through the bag, eliminating circling roots
- Success with difficult varieties
Container Trees
Field grown 1-year and 2-year trees (with 2 and 3-year root systems), harvested as bareroot, potted with soilless media and rooted out to the drain holes prior to shipping.
- Arrow-straight trunks without hooks or crooks
- Massive four-cornered, fine hairy “feeder” root systems
- Strong crotch angles and full 360° canopy tops
Bareroot Conifer Liners
Premium field grown, root-pruned 3-year spruce liners lifted from high density beds, ready for immediate field planting or potting into #2, #3 and #5 containers. Seedling and grafted varieties including Colorado, Blue Diamond, Fat Albert, Hoopsii, Bacheri, Baby Blue Eyes, Fastigiata, Black Hills, Weeping Norway, White and The Blues Weeping Spruce.
- Efficient — dense roots latch in for the fastest possible time-to-market
- Cost effective — economical field and container inputs
- Root pruned — more resistant to drought, stress and transplant shock
Container Conifers
Field grown, root-pruned conifers. Smaller conifers are lifted with rich, soil-packed roots from 3-year liner beds and potted into #2, #3 and #5. Larger conifers are field dug, wrapped in copper-treated burlap, tied with sisal twine, and potted with 18-month time-release fertilizer — rooted out to the drain holes before shipping.
- Fine feeder roots centralized under the tree for greater rootball retention
- Smaller, dense root balls for economical freight
- Greatly reduced plant loss and transplant shock
Container Shrubs
Grown with the finest quality growing practices — field or container grown depending on the variety. Our shrubs have generous heads and are potted into #2 to #5-super containers.
- Black Lace Elderberry, Fire Light® Hydrangea
- Little Princess Spirea, Royal Purple Smokebush
- Wine & Roses® Weigela, Dart's Gold Ninebark, Dwarf Burning Bush
Container Evergreens
Root-pruned liners sized into containers ideal for field planting and shifting, with the same benefits as our container conifers.
- Up to 100% take from dense, fibrous root systems rooted out to the drain holes
- Ready to latch into the soil for optimum first-season top growth

How we do it differently
Quality wins. For over forty years we've grown trees and shrubs the right way — with careful practices that show up in a healthier, better-looking plant in your yard. The difference is in the details, from the rootball to the trunk to the day it ships.

2-Year Spacing
Unlike most Oregon growers' 1-year spacing, our trees get room for denser roots, more light, faster caliper growth and symmetrical canopies.
Starch Testing
We starch test root samples before harvest, digging only at true dormancy for maximum spring growth.
Dense Root Systems
Roots are preserved at digging and kept moist from harvest to grading, potting and shipping.
Arrow-Straight Trunks
Bamboo stakes keep trunks arrow-straight and leaders upright — no hooks or crooks.
Optimal Crotch Angles
Strong branch crotch angles and full 360° canopy tops for a better-structured tree.
Root-Pruned Conifers
Sester Farms pioneered root pruning for field grown conifers — compact, fibrous rootballs that transplant with ease.
Precise Grading
Every bareroot tree is individually calipered and graded by hand to caliper and ANSI height standards.
Protected in Shipping
Our deciduous trees are fitted with trunk wraps so they arrive in the same condition they left the farm.
